Is the Hisense PL2 worth it for a living room?
Yes, if your living room can hold a 20.9-inch-wide, 13.2-inch-deep console on a cabinet in front of the screen wall: Hisense's spec sheet lists 2700 ANSI lumens, a 0.22:1 throw ratio, an 80 to 150 inch picture, Google TV, 30W of stereo sound with Dolby Atmos and two HDMI 2.1 inputs with ALLM. The points to weigh are the 85% DCI-P3 color space and 3,000:1 native contrast that Hisense rates, an 18.7 lb console, and a placement distance that changes with the screen size you choose.

What Hisense publishes about the PL2
Two Hisense documents were read for this review: the Hisense USA announcement of the PL2 Laser Cinema, dated October 23, 2024, and the "PL2 Laser Cinema" spec sheet linked from the PL2 product page on hisense-usa.com. The announcement describes "2,700 ANSI lumens of brightness", "a customizable projection size ranging from 80 to 150 inches", a "0.22 throw ratio for a cinematic screen experience in compact spaces", "a native contrast ratio of 3,000:1", Dolby Vision and HDR10, "immersive sound from two top-firing, built-in speakers featuring Dolby Atmos", "active 3D capability" and a Google TV platform with Control4, AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit compatibility. It also names Filmmaker Mode, ALLM and MEMC.
The spec sheet fills in the rest: a 0.47" DMD chipset, 4K at 60Hz, an 85% DCI-P3 color space, an X-Fusion laser engine rated for 25,000+ hours, HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG, 30W of stereo audio with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital under its surround-sound entry, Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3, wired Ethernet, 350W power consumption, a graphite finish, a backlit voice remote, a cleaning kit in the box and a 2-year limited warranty.
What the Amazon listing adds
The Amazon listing's title covers the same ground: ultra short throw, 80 to 150 inches, 4K UHD, 2,700 lumens, 3000:1 contrast, Dolby Vision and Atmos, 3D, Google TV and Wi-Fi 6E. Per the listing, the X-Fusion laser delivers "25,000+ hours of entertainment", the DLP system "controls 2.07 million micro mirrors", the 4K AI Upscaler "elevates low-resolution content", the palette is "more than 1.07 billion colours", and Dolby Vision plus "multiple High Dynamic Range (HDR) standards" are supported. The listing says 2,700 lumens. Hisense's own documents specify 2700 ANSI lumens, naming the measurement standard the listing leaves out. Nothing in the listing contradicts the spec sheet.
Placement: the throw ratio and the size chart
Hisense's announcement pairs the 0.22 throw ratio with compact spaces. Ultra-short-throw versus long-throw for a bright living room compares the two projector types. Hisense's throw-distance chart gives the image dimensions at each diagonal: an 80-inch picture is 69.7 inches wide and 39.2 inches tall, a 100-inch picture is 87.2 by 49.0 inches, a 120-inch picture is 104.6 by 58.8 inches, and the 150-inch maximum is 130.7 by 73.5 inches. The chart also gives A and B figures for each size and notes that a 5% deviation is considered acceptable, so read those figures off Hisense's chart and measure your wall against it before you commit to a screen size.
The console itself is 20.9 by 4.7 by 13.2 inches (W × H × D) and weighs 18.7 lbs per the spec sheet. Hisense lists Digital Lens Focus, which "allows you to adjust the projector's focus mechanism with your remote", and Auto Geometric Calibration.
Picture: brightness, contrast and HDR
Hisense rates the PL2 at 2700 ANSI lumens. Hisense's spec sheet rates native contrast at 3,000:1 and the color space at 85% DCI-P3. ALR versus white screen for an ultra-short-throw projector compares the two screen types.
HDR support is Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG in the spec sheet's table. One wrinkle: the same sheet's feature bullets print "Dolby Vision HDR10+", and the announcement names Dolby Vision and HDR10 only, so HDR10+ appears in one place and is absent from two others. Both versions are shown here as printed. All three sources agree Dolby Vision is present.
Hisense also lists active 3D, shown as "3D Ready: Active" on the sheet, and its announcement names Filmmaker Mode and MEMC.
Sound, smart platform and ports
30W of stereo with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital is what the spec sheet lists, from the two top-firing speakers the announcement describes. There is an optical digital output, an analog audio output and eARC for a soundbar or receiver. The sheet also marks the PL2 as WiSA Ready for wireless multichannel speakers and lists Sound Send.
The platform is Google TV (Google Certified), with the Google Play store, Google Assistant voice control, Chromecast and AirPlay 2 mirroring, and "Works With" entries for Hey Google and Amazon Alexa. Connectivity on the sheet is Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3 and a wired Ethernet port.
Ports, per the spec sheet's table: two HDMI 2.1 inputs with ALLM, one HDMI 2.0 input, eARC on HDMI port 3, one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, Ethernet, optical out and analog out. The sheet's connectivity graphic prints "2x HDMI" while the table lists three HDMI inputs; both are reproduced here, so confirm the port count on the console if the third input matters to you.
Gaming on the PL2
Hisense's sheet lists ALLM on the HDMI 2.1 inputs, "HSR240", and an Auto Low Latency Mode that "detects when a gaming console is the active source and automatically adjusts projector settings". Hisense's sheet gives resolution and refresh rate as 4K at 60Hz. Hisense does not publish an input-lag figure in either document read for this review, so none is given here. The listing itself says nothing about gaming.

Living-room setup checklist
- Pick the diagonal first, read the image width and height for it off Hisense's chart, check the wall has that much room, and read the chart's A and B figures for that size.
- Decide on the screen surface; the listing speaks of placing the console at the right distance from your wall.
- Clear a cabinet at least 20.9 inches wide and deep enough for the 13.2-inch console, and make sure it does not flex when someone leans on it.
- Run eARC from HDMI port 3 to a soundbar or receiver if the built-in 30W is not enough for the room.
- After placement, run Auto Geometric Calibration and set focus with Digital Lens Focus from the remote.
- Put a console on one of the two HDMI 2.1 inputs so ALLM can do its job.
Another Hisense ultra-short-throw model
Hisense also makes the L9H ultra-short-throw laser projector, and the Hisense L9H review by spec covers that model.
Verdict
For a living room, the PL2's published specification offers a 0.22 throw ratio that Hisense pairs with compact spaces, 2700 ANSI lumens, Google TV and Dolby Atmos, and two HDMI 2.1 inputs with ALLM. The figures to weigh against your room are the 85% DCI-P3 color space and the 3,000:1 native contrast that Hisense publishes. Check the current price on Amazon.
Where to buy: Hisense's spec sheet lists a remote, power cable and cleaning kit, and the Amazon listing gives no box contents, so confirm what ships with the console before ordering. Check the current price on Amazon.
